Automatically backup your PC for FREE!

Its the age old problem, your PC has failed and the IT Tech asks you whether you have backups. The answer to this question is nearly always no, but it shouldn't be, given there are some really good options available for free.

Of course there are going to be those of you that are too paranoid to backup your files to the cloud, in case the cloud service provider gets hacked etc. Well that is always a possibility, just like its a possibility that your computer gets hacked. But is that worth the risk of losing everything? I think not!

So you've decided that its about time you did something about your backups. The problem now is you don't know where to start. That's where I come in :) Use one of the methods below to have piece of mind that your files are safe.

Option 1. Use Google Backup and Sync

Did you know that as long as you have a google account you can backup up to 15GB of files to the cloud for free! All you have to do is download Google's Backup and Sync program, install it and select the folders you want to backup. Easy as that. You can download it from here: https://www.google.com/drive/download/backup-and-sync/

Option 2. Use Microsoft OneDrive

Similar to option one, but a little less customizable is good old Microsoft. You can backup 5GB as long as you have a Microsoft Account. Most windows computers come with OneDrive installed, so its just a matter of opening the app and putting in your Microsoft account username and password. Then anything you put into the OneDrive folder will be backed up. Download OneDrive from here: https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-nz/download/

Option 3. Use DropBox

Similar to option two is DropBox. You can sign up for a free DropBox account which gives you 2GB free online storage. You download the app from: https://www.dropbox.com/install and then anything you put into the DropBox folder will be backed up.

Option 4. Install SyncBack Free and plug in an external hard drive or USB Drive

This is my preferred option personally. I have a lot of content to backup and 15GB is not enough, but I don't want to pay a subscription fee to an online backup solution. So what do you do, I bought a large external hdd and have set up a program called Syncback Free. With this program you can choose what you want to backup and select where on your hdd you want it backed up to and then its as simple as plugging in your external hdd and opening Syncback free and clicking run. It will then backup all the folders you have selected. You can download SyncBack Free from here: https://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html

Hopefully you have found one of the options useful. Obviously there are paid options available, but why pay when you can get it for free!
