My Computers Slow, How Do I Speed It Up?

This is a question I am asked quite frequently. Part of it is the quality and speed of the laptop or desktop that you bought, but part of it is down to having everything as optimised as possible.

Here are my tips for speeding up your computer:

1. Uninstall software you don't need. So many times when you install something it comes with bundled software. This takes up space, and if its set to run at start-up can slow down your computer.

2. Remove unnecessary programs from running in the task bar. Some programs such as skype try and run all the time. If you are like me and only use skype once in a blue moon to have a conversation with someone, there is no point having it run constantly and take up resources on your computer.

3. Add extra memory or a faster hard drive. Upgrading your hardware (if possible) is a way to get a bit more performance out of your existing computer.

4. Make sure all your programs are up to date. Programs don't always just add new features or security fixes. Sometimes they actually improve the performance of their product.

5. Uninstall browser plugins. Having too many browser plugins can cause browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge and Apple Safari to crawl. Uninstall unneeded browser plugins and clear your history every once in a while to keep your browser running as smoothly as possible.

6. Scan for malware. Sometimes malware (Malicious Software) can sneak onto your computer and just sit there without being detected for a long period of time. Run a scan using an Anti-Malware program such as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to find and get rid of those programs off your PC.

7. If all hope is lost, then buy a new computer. This isn't really a tip for speeding up your existing computer but sometimes buying a new computer is the only way to get the better performance you deserve.
